The Lingnan lion dance is a traditional Chinese folk dance art, which was listed among the first group of national intangible cultural heritage items in 2006. Originating in the Pearl River Delta region, it developed into a mature system in places such as Foshan and Heshan in Guangdong during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). Integrating martial arts, dance, and music, it stands as a major carrier of Cantonese culture.

The Lingnan lion crafting technique is particularly exquisite. The lion head features a bamboo frame layered with paper and silk, decorated with colorful paintings highlighting its fierce and majestic demeanor. Details such as the lion’s horns and eyelashes are imbued with auspicious symbolism intended to ward off evil and invite good luck. During performances, two performers work in coordination, accompanied by drumbeats in line with the rhythms of the “Seven Star Drumming Method.” They perform stylized movements such as caiqing (literally, “picking the green”), high-pole stunts, and ball playing. Among them, the caiqing ritual is believed to dispel bad luck and embrace good fortune.

The Lingnan lion dance is divided into two major schools: Foshan and Heshan. The former features realistic and lively movements, while the latter appears more majestic and powerful. The lion dance culture embodies the collective memory of clan unity and a martial spirit. During traditional festivals or business launch ceremonies, lion dances are performed as a way to celebrate, making it an important cultural bond in Lingnan society. Today, through lion dance competitions, cultural and creative products, and other activities, this intangible cultural heritage continues to thrive both at home and abroad. Currently, there are over 100 professional Lingnan lion dance teams passing on the skills, and new forms of dissemination such as VR digitization have emerged.

Lingnan culture is an important component of traditional Chinese culture. As a national intangible cultural heritage item, the Lingnan lion dance has achieved remarkable results in the course of contemporary development. In terms of inheritance, many schools have introduced the lion dance as a special course, nurturing a large number of young enthusiasts and ensuring the tradition thrives perpetually. Its performance styles have been continuously innovated, integrating modern music and dance elements to make the lion dance more enjoyable to watch.

Chinese civilization is distinguished by its creativity. Chinese civilization places stress on discarding the outdated in favor of the new and making progress on a daily basis. It embodies both profound depth and dynamic forward surges.
